Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the benefit of using a 0.05% sodium fluoride mouthrinse for one year. A total of 99 students, ages between 8 through 11, in Mockcheon grade school, Cheonan, Korea, were participated for this study. The DMFT were determined from the baseline and the final examination by using a WHO criteria,
The results obtained from this study were as the following;
1. The prevalence of dental caries for the baseline and at the end of one year¢¥s of fluoride mouthrinse were 62.6% and 59.7% respectively.
2. The DMFT rate of the participants were 12.4% at the baseline and 12.6% after one year¢¥s implementation of fluoride mouthrinsing program.
3. The DMFTs for baseline and at the end of one year of fluoride mouthrinsing program were 2.12 and 2.34 respectively. This results indicates that the increase of DMFT for one year was 10.4%. When this results were compared with a 16,4% of general population of Korean children of age at 11, this results clearly showed a 36.59% reduction of DMFT by implementing fluoride mouthrinsing program.
4. The prevalence of dental caries, DMFT rate and DMFT from the control cohort were 62.3%, 17.5% and 3.0 respectively. This results indicated that the use of fluoride mouthrinse resulted a preventive benefit of 4.2% in prevalence, 26.7% in DMFT rate and 22.0% in DMFT.
